National Safety Campaigns & Initiatives
Governments, organisations, and communities across the UK have launched various national campaigns and initiatives to promote women’s safety and well-being. These efforts aim to raise awareness, strengthen legal protections, and create safer environments in both public and private spaces.
National safety campaigns often focus on educating the public about women’s rights, encouraging respectful behaviour, and challenging harmful attitudes. At the same time, initiatives such as helplines, support services, self-defence programmes, and improved reporting systems are designed to provide practical support and protection for women.
By combining policy changes, education, and community engagement, these campaigns play a vital role in reducing violence, empowering women, and building a culture of safety, equality, and respect across society.
We have listed a few that you may or may not be aware of below:
- White Ribbon UK: White Ribbon UK is the leading charity engaging men and boys to prevent violence against women and girls. They offer a comprehensive structured workplace, culture-change training.
- ENOUGH. End Violence Against Women and Girls: A prominent government public awareness campaign focusing on challenging harmful peer behaviors and educating the public on how to identify and report harassment, coercive control, and sexual assault.
- UK SAYS NO MORE. Safe Spaces: The Safe Spaces scheme was originally launched during the pandemic as part of its UK Says No More campaign. It can be accessed by asking a member of staff at a participating location to use their Safe Space. Victim-survivors are then shown to a private room equipped with a phone or tablet, providing a safe and discreet way to reach out to friends and family, contact specialist support services and start their journey to recovery. Visit www.hestia.org/safe to find your nearest Safe Space.
- Come Together to End Domestic Abuse. Women’s Aid: The campaign will measure attitudinal change and provide evidence for what we need to change, as well as the reach of the campaign during the coming two years.
- Get Me Home Safely. Unite the Union: Our goal is simple: we want everyone working together to keep workers, especially women, safe on their commute to and from work. That means safer and more reliable transport, paid or subsidised transport home after late shifts, free and safer car parks.
- End Online Abuse. End Violence Against Women: Campaigning for the reforms of laws relating to online abuse and robust regulation of the tech platforms perpetrators use, so those responsible are held accountable.
- Northamptonshire Women’s Charter: A call to action for organisations to show that they are working to make woman and girls safer
- The Hollie Gazzard Trust’s Women’s Safety Charter: is a powerful initiative that supports businesses and organisations in making public, practical commitments to improve the safety of women, both in the workplace and in the wider community
